The Fubukis race across the practice ground. Takeru is even more excited. Now he may be able to save the world.

The command room begins the exercise. Yuuko's mode in the command room is serious, even as the new surface pilots are jovial.

He's not listening to anyone, now. Takeru fires his paint balls at the BETA.

The exercise is set to take place in (what’s left of) Negishi Forest Park. The Type-87 Maintenance Trailers containers are jacked-up one after another.

The Surface Pilots participating as Red Team are all veterans with over 20 combat sorties.

They leave, knowing that all they can do to help him is act normal around him. “Instructor” Jinguuji has something she wants to say to him.

The drugs have caused Takeru to lose his fear of the BETA. He says ammo is coming soon and doesn’t want to fall back.

As Takeru and Meiya stand there helpless, the Red Team Shark unit arrives.

207 hurries to the hangar, using NOE flight to avoid the Laser Class. But they're blocked by the BETA.

Everyone participating has been told that Takeru was the mind behind the new OS, and A207 is part of its R&D team.

Participating in the exercise will be Takeru's A207 Platoon and 1 platoon from every TSF unit at Yokohama base.

Only hatred and murder drive him now. The enemy are immortal monsters. The dance of madness is hot and violent. “Get off the Earth! Give back humanity”

The veteran surface pilot leads Takeru to a dark corner of the hangar.

The morning's exercises end with Takeru's unit getting an A evaluation while the other team gets a B. Takeru silently rejoices that everything is proceeding according to Yuuko’s plan.

When Shark Leader sees the state of 207, they ask permission from Command to execute a “procedure” on them.

Takeru smirks and says it was harder than he thought, and that he wanted an even bigger win. Mikoto tells Takeru he's amazing.

The command room begins the exercise. Yuuko's mode in the command room is serious, even as the new surface pilots are jovial.

Takeru sits in front of his destroyed Fubuki, unmoving. He was saved from certain death.

The BETA in the exercise area have been defeated. The corpses of the humans and the BETA are both rotting in the fields.

Marimo plays one last card to get Takeru to calm down. “Shirogane, let me tell you something. I pissed myself on my first mission, too.”

The afternoon exercises begin. The formation for the afternoon exercises changes, and Chizuru and Meiya join up with Takeru.

Marimo opens herself up to her student. Not as an instructor, or as a soldier.

The Gekishins try their best to fight back against the BETA horde, but their paint rounds are useless.

Marimo tells him it’s okay to be a coward. That if you know fear, you become sensitive to death, and hard to kill.

Takeru is ashamed of himself and the way he acted.

After the training unit is disbanded, Takeru is told by Yuuko that he’ll be assigned to Special Unit A-01, serving directly under Yokohama Base Command.

Takeru is caught off guard. The veterans excitedly tell Takeru that the fact that new pilots were able to easily defeat veterans shows the power of the new OS.

Takeru is suspicious that an explosion occurred in a non-live-fire exercise. He's not certain if he should continue the exercise at all.

Takeru smirks and says it was harder than he thought, and that he wanted an even bigger win. Mikoto tells Takeru he's amazing.

She threw herself into battle, hoping to forget the pain, but realized that this wasn't real atonement.

Takeru tells himself he can’t die here. The controls aren’t responding, the power's dropping out, and his cockpit turns black.

Meiya draws the one coming after them away, while Takeru watches for the unseen TSF. Chizuru faces off against the last TSF while moving into a position where she can aid the others.

When she was a young rookie, she had a baseless self-confidence too. It ended up getting all her comrades brutally killed.

As Chizuru goes to contact command, a BETA warning appears on everyone's retinal displays.

Takeru smirks and says it was harder than he thought, and that he wanted an even bigger win. Mikoto tells Takeru he's amazing.

Command orders the TSFs to stay on standby until ammo arrives. Shark's leader gives the same order to 207. Chizuru recovers enough to give orders to 207.

Takeru keeps fighting without bullets. He's drawn away a huge number of BETA, but his TSF takes a critical hit.

Takeru suggests returning to the hangar to avoid splitting their forces. Someone must stay behind to guard the retreat.

The veterans ask Takeru if he's really the one behind the new OS. Takeru tells the veterans that exchanging information during the exercises is forbidden. The veterans laugh at him.

The sounds continue as the control seat becomes a coffin. Alternative IV and the new OS are just getting started. He hasn't even found Sumika yet.

The veterans tell Takeru he's obligated to answer the questions of a superior officer. Takeru has no choice but to tell the veterans that yes, he is the one behind the new OS.

Morning on the day of the exercises. Today's wake-up is especially fluffy.

Takeru’s Fubuki flies through the ruins of a residential area, and receives the first shows of the match from Red Team.

The Surface Pilots participating as Red Team are all veterans with over 20 combat sorties.

The veteran Surface Pilot dodges Takeru’s surprise attack, and counterattacks. Takeru is faster, though, and lands a finishing blow.

He didn't want to die. But there was nothing he could do. He calls himself a coward who can do nothing but cry and piss himself.

The golden twilight shines down on the battlefield where so much was lost, and the shadows grow longer and darker.

The Gekishin escapes Takeru's attack, but now Ayamine stands in its way. Takeru gives the orders for a plan to work together and lure the enemy into a kill zone.

Sgt. Jinguuji says they have been temporarily designated as Flight A207 to allow for a comparative practical evaluation of the proof-of-concept OS in their TSFs against the XM3.

Morning on the day of the exercises. Today's wake-up is especially fluffy.

A207 gives a shout, encouraged by Takeru’s words. Sgt. Jinguuji watches over her former students.

207 is told to fall back to hangar 37 and bring ammo.

A stimulant is given to Takeru's team now that the fear has faded. The fear of death fades and the team is ready to enter battle.

Marimo’s gentle words stir a light within Takeru. Just when he’s about to rise up once more...

Command orders the TSFs to stay on standby until ammo arrives. Shark's leader gives the same order to 207. Chizuru recovers enough to give orders to 207.

As Takeru and Meiya stand there helpless, the Red Team Shark unit arrives.

The former members of 207B form up. They now feel a little awkward about their tearful goodbye, especially since their former instructor is the one explaining the exercise.

Marimo opens herself up to her student. Not as an instructor, or as a soldier.

The F-15s are helpless against the BETA without real bullets. Takeru begins to shiver in fear as the TSFs are destroyed one after another.

Something precious was broken. Why did this happen? There’s no way to know. A loud shout, and everything turns black.

Yuuko tells Takeru that it puts incredible mental stress on Kasumi to move him across worlds. Kasumi is ready to “observe” Takeru.

In his old, peaceful world, the people Takeru cares about are living their lives.

Meiya tells a stunned Takeru that she snuck into his bed to see him sleep.

Students who didn’t pass are forced to stand up. Tamase is afraid she’ll be one of them. Takeru's name is called too at the end, but for another reason.

In first period on Monday morning, Yuuko loudly announces that she's handing back tests.

Meiya's name is called next. Meiya walks proudly onto the stage.

Takeru leaves Hakuryo-Hiiragi, the formula in hand.

Takeru is told by Yuuko to come to the physics prep room during lunch.

Kasumi is fighting to save the world, too. The young girl falls into a peaceful slumber, watched over by the hero.

Takeru describes abstractly what he learned in the other world. He says that people can only resolve to do difficult things to protect the things they care about.

Sumika calls out to Takeru as he waits in his room.

Takeru thanks Meiya, like the others did. Meiya thanks him too.

The Surface Pilot Badges are handed out.

Paul Radhabinod ends his speech by saying that their promotion is in recognition of their tremendous efforts during the coup attempt in rescuing the Shogun.

The team is happy to have Mikoto back. The bonds between the team after their days of difficult training are strong.

Takeru smiles to see that Sumika is just like he remembered her.

The Surface Pilot Badges are handed out.

Takeru thanks Kasumi for helping him complete the mission safely.

Takeru says his thank you, as well. “I will always be proud that you were the one who trained me,” Takeru says. Marimo says that Takeru was always destined for greatness.

The new pilots walk up to Sgt. Jinguuji as she talks to herself. For a moment, they're caught off guard when she refers to them by their new ranks. They now outrank their instructor.

Sumika and Takeru live next door, and talk like this all the time. Sumika asks Takeru directly why he seems different.

First, the team’s leader Chizuru receives her badge.

Takeru meets with Yuuko and says he's come to take the formula.

Yuuko tells both Takeru and Kasumi to get some rest.

Takeru steels himself as Yuuko tells him this may be the last time he can go to the other world.

Yuuko tells Takeru that it puts incredible mental stress on Kasumi to move him across worlds. Kasumi is ready to “observe” Takeru.
